Another Alfatihah : Updated

A bizarre cosmic twist. In the midst of death are we the still-living ones struggling to cope with loss and to make sense of it all.

Merely a few hours after yesterday’s entry I received a phonecall from Toj informing me of Lan’s (Kuchalana‘s bassist) critical state in the ICU of HKL. I did not receive much information regarding his predicament and remember assuming that it was a road accident. A preliminary round of questions over ym with a few concerned friends revealed the horrific nature of the events leading to his death.

I am not among the lucky ones who were personally close to this soft-spoken, affable man. Of course I’d seen him play during various occasions and there isn’t a doubt in my mind regarding how musical and precise his playing was, providing the solid thump and intricate reggae basslines behind Kuchalana’s sound. Standing tall on the stage, eyes downcast, a smile on his lips and head a-nodding.

The first and only time we actually held conversation was mid 2007 at a restaurant in Pandan Indah. As a fellow musician aware of and very appreciative of his talents, I was struck by his humility and warmth and above all his transfixing smiling eyes. Another common ground we shared was being fathers to daughters.

I shudder at the thought of the girl losing her dear dad and curse the perpetrators of this barbaric and incomprehensible act of violence.

Lang, semula!

Hallelujah

You might have heard this version (by Jeff Buckley) of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah  on House, Grey’s Anatomy, The OC or West Wing.

Well I heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
she tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well baby I’ve been here before
I’ve seen this room and I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
What’s really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who’d out-drew you
And it’s not a cry that you hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah <<(held for a long time)
Hallelujah

Kugiran Majlis Hari Guru

We just had an hour and a half worth of rehearsal this morning. It’s mid-term exams again and i could only request for my pre-recess classes to be relieved.

We brought our equipment to the music room. Set-up the amps, brought out the congas, plugged in and shot straight to business. A version of Nidji’s Hapus Aku. The kids were given a scrap of paper with the chords for the song scribbled on it. Verse Bridge Chorus. It helps that it’s a BIG song now on radio.

During this first and only rehearsal we worked on the song’s general arrangement. We had to do quite a bit of work with the percussive intruments and had to dispense with the congas. Just the shaker and one of ’em tubular bells on a string thingies. Indispensible in Malaysian nasyid. Kriiiiing.

So the intro’s a cluster of three notes, slightly overdriven on my G&L ASAT Classic or as my daughter calls Kak G. Then the shaker keeping beat with two acoustics playing the opening chords and all of us crash together with P’s old Squire bass. Then the singing starts and God bless those ears tomorrow.

Six or seven runs, no more. We stopped as the bell signals the end of recess. It didn’t surprise me that much when I realized that the boys skipped recess while rehearsing. It occurred to me that rocking-out was better than a cold plate of nasi lemak anyday.

Menanti Keajaiban

Tak semudah bagiku untuk bisa meredakan resahku

Meski kucoba menyangkal sungguh merisaukan benakku

Aku memimpikan malaikat

Berkenan menemani aku

Tuk sekedar melipurkan hati…

Dengan setulus hati

Betapa aku telah lama tinggalkan binar hatiku

Aku mungkin kan tertawa, namun jiwaku terasa… jauh

Tak lelah kupandingi langit

Berjuta harap ku menanti penuh harap ku menanti

Keajaiban datang dan menghampiriku

Oh…

Aku tak tahu apa yang kan kutemui

Aku masih menunggu dan menunggu

Berharap akan datang… keajaiban

Coda:

Tapi Padi berhak atas sanjungan sesiapapun.

Maka jangan kecewakan dirimu dengan Padi kalau kau masih melalui fasa ‘marah sistem’ atau mempunyai sindrom ‘fuck melody, let’s trip on bleeps from Thom Yorke’s nasal cavities’.

Juga jauhi Padi kalau kau pernah Afundi Mawi.

Midlake : The Trials of Van Occupanther

I’ve been listening to a lot of this album by Midlake, a band from Denton, Texas. The sound is pop and reminds one of vintage Fleetwood Mac and Harvest-era Neil Young. The funny thing with it is it manages to sound modern and progressive as well, with a few tracks adorned with minimalist analogue synth.

Midlake writes gorgeous songs of rural loneliness and this is (get this) a concept album of sorts. It entails the adventures of a certain Van Occupanther, born in 1891. So expect a lot of references to trees, snow, winter sky, hunters, jilting brides and other types of rural melancholia.

This entry is merely a note of appreciation and not really a review. If interested, you can go here or here.
It’s definitely one of my personal musical moments this year. Can’t stand My Chemical Romance, me.

And while I’m at it, I must admit a puzzling aversion towards home-themed songs like Padi’s Ke Mana Pun Angin Berhembus, U2’s Walk On, Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound or Michael Buble’s (blush) Home. So, transcribed below is my current favourite Midlake song entitled Head Home.

No-one seems to be around today
They must’ve all gone off without me again
I think I’ll head home

Maybe I’ll find them gathered ’round my doorstep
Oh, to sleep in a comfortable bed
I think I’ll head home

No-one seems to be around today
They must’ve all gone off without me again
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home

Bring me a day full of honest work
and a roof that never leaks
I’ll be satisfied

Bring me the news all about the town
How it struggles to help all the farmers out
During harvest time

But there’s someone I’d like to see
She never mentions a word to me
She reads Leviathan

I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home

Bring me a day full of honest work
and a roof that never leaks
I’ll be satisfied

Bring me the news all about the town
How it struggles to help all the farmers out
During harvest time

But there’s someone I’d like to see
She never mentions a word to me
She reads Leviathan

I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home

I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
I think I’ll head home
